Pumpkins and the letter Ss...

This week we are studying pumpkins.  We have a variety of pumpkins that we are exploring, inside and out.

We will see if a pumpkin will sink or float, and sharpen our fine-motor skills by using a plastic hammer to drive golf tees into a pumpkin.  (Now that is fun!)  :)   We have also painted paper plates, which we will use to create a pumpkin bulletin board, to display our artwork.  Pumpkin seeds were in the Counting Jar this week, and after counting them as a class, we tasted the pumpkin seeds and then graphed whether or not we liked them.

Our letter this week is Ss.  We are working on writing the letter Ss, and discovering words that begin with the /s/ sound.  Because the upper-case and the lower-case letter Ss look alike, it is important when writing them, that we are able to tell the difference.  (Thus the importance of writing them on the lined paper, correctly.)   The letter Ss has a sound, that many children can learn fairly quickly, therefore we continued our study of the letter Aa, focusing on the long A sound.

In our Science curriculum, we explored the changes in many of the trees during the season of Fall.  We made tree books, labeling each page with a specific part of a tree.  A diverse collection of tree puzzles were also available for the students to work on as a group or individually.

Please remember Thursday is Family Night at Highland Park from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.  Please join us in the classroom starting at 6:00 for Math games, followed by hot dogs, chips and a drink (tailgate food) on the playground at 6:30.  Don't forget to wear your jersey or favorite team colors that day to school and that evening!  We look forward to seeing you there!  :)
